The example uses a published national rebuild range. It is not a Seattle WA Mobile Mechanic price. Internal transmission rebuilds and replacements require a suitably equipped specialist; they are not advertised here as mobile services.

How this calculator works

Choose the repair path your mechanic is discussing. The tool starts with a published national range, adds any separate costs you enter, and applies an illustrative tax rate only if you supply one. It does not choose a repair from a warning light, identify your transmission from a model year, or retrieve a quote for your vehicle.

The reference ranges come from the CarParts.com supplier guide, “Transmission Replacement Cost: What Drivers Really Pay and How to Decide,” updated March 27, 2026. They include parts and labor at the broad national level described in that guide. The midpoint is simply halfway between the range ends; it is not a measured average paid by Seattle drivers.

Each range end = (reference cost + separately quoted additions) × (1 + your illustrative tax rate ÷ 100).

Leave additions at zero when the quote already includes the work. Leave tax at zero to compare pre-tax totals. If you enter a rate, the tool applies it uniformly to the whole subtotal for arithmetic comparison. It does not determine which items are taxable or establish a Washington tax rate. Displayed dollar amounts round to the nearest $10.

Repair paths and reference costs

Work being discussedPublished national rangeWhat the figure represents
Rebuild$1,500 to $3,500Reconditioning the existing transmission; complexity can push the actual cost higher
Manual replacement$2,000 to $4,000Broad installed replacement reference
Conventional automatic replacement$3,000 to $5,500Broad installed replacement reference
CVT replacement$3,000 to $8,000Broad installed replacement reference with substantial vehicle variation

Each range covers a different job. The guide also discusses used, rebuilt, remanufactured and new units. Confirm which unit and warranty a written quote includes. A low advertised price for a unit by itself is not the price to remove the old transmission and install the replacement.

A worked budget example

With rebuild selected, no additions and no tax, the example is $1,500 to $3,500, with an arithmetic midpoint of $2,500. Suppose you have a separate $200 quoted cost that is excluded from that reference, and you want to compare a hypothetical 10% tax scenario. The calculator gives $1,870 to $4,070, with a midpoint of $2,970.

The 10% example is an arithmetic assumption, not a statement about the tax on your repair. Confirm the taxable items and final rate on the actual estimate. Avoid adding fluid, installation or another charge a second time when it is already included in the quoted job.

What changes the final quote?

The confirmed problem

A shift concern does not automatically mean the transmission needs replacement. Testing may identify a control, wiring or other mechanical problem with a different repair scope. Our check engine light diagnostics page explains how a stored code fits into an investigation. Describe the symptom and when it happens before asking for a particular part to be changed.

The exact unit and installation work

Transmission design, access and parts availability affect the job. Ask whether the quote includes removal and installation, the specified fluid, related cooling-system work, programming and checks afterward when those apply. A specialist should explain required work for the actual vehicle. This calculator adds no automatic multiplier for brand, vehicle age or Seattle location.

The condition of the rest of the vehicle

Compare the proposed repair with the car’s condition, other known work and your plans for keeping it. A single percentage of vehicle value cannot make that decision for you. If you are evaluating another used vehicle, a pre-purchase inspection answers a different question from an estimate to fix your current transmission.

Maintenance versus internal repair

A fluid service and an internal rebuild have different scopes. The transmission fluid change cost guide covers the maintenance side, including a drain-and-fill, filter service and a flush. Do not use its lower maintenance figures as evidence that fluid service will fix worn internal parts. Follow the vehicle’s service information and the findings from diagnosis.

Questions about transmission repair costs

Does this calculator tell me whether to rebuild or replace?

No. It compares budget references for the work you select. The choice depends on the confirmed failure, the condition of reusable components, available replacement units and the written warranty. Ask the specialist to explain why the proposed repair fits the findings. A different selection in this calculator does not change the vehicle’s diagnosis.

Why is my quote outside the displayed range?

The references cover broad national scenarios and cannot include every transmission or repair condition. Your quote may involve a different unit, more labor, related damage or work excluded from the source range. Ask for a written breakdown and compare estimates for the same scope. The upper number here is not a price cap.

Is a used unit the same as a rebuild?

No. A used unit has prior service history, while a rebuild involves work on worn or damaged components. A remanufactured unit is another category that should be named on the quote. Compare what was replaced or tested, the unit’s compatibility and the warranty on both parts and installation before comparing the totals.

Are taxes, towing and diagnosis included?

The calculator starts with the published repair range before any tax you enter. Towing and diagnosis are not added automatically. Use the additions field only for a separate quoted item outside the repair reference, and check the original estimate first. The tool cannot know whether a provider will credit a diagnostic charge toward later work.

Will a transmission fluid change solve a shift problem?

That depends on the cause. A fluid service is maintenance and cannot be assumed to repair damaged internal components. Explain the warning lights, shifting behavior and recent service history when arranging diagnosis. The warning-light driving guide provides context for discussing the symptom; this cost calculator gives no safety-to-drive verdict.

Does Seattle WA Mobile Mechanic rebuild transmissions at my home?

Internal rebuilds and complete transmission replacements are not advertised as mobile services on this site. You can discuss a mechanical concern and the appropriate first step using the form below. Confirm the scope and suitable location before arranging work. See our mobile mechanic service list for the services currently described on the site.

Before approving a repair

Ask for the diagnosis, the proposed work and the warranty in writing. The FTC’s auto repair guidance explains written estimates and the distinction between published labor allowances and actual time worked. Compare the same work across quotes, and confirm how additional findings will be approved before work proceeds.
